May 23, 2006: Red Sox 10 Yankees 6

Your typical completely wacky Red Sox-Yankees contest here, in which the Yankees fail to get a hit until the 7th inning but the Red Sox have to come back to win, 10-6. One look at Tim Wakefield's pitching line should tell you that this was a crazy one.

The Yankees start the scoring in the third without the benefit of a hit. Wakefield walks the bases loaded to start the inning, and Derek Jeter hits a sac fly to score a runner. Andy Phillips is then picked off 2nd, and Gary Sheffield pops out to end the inning. 1 run on zero hits. The Red Sox come back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff Willie Harris walk followed by a Youk double, then a Mark Loretta ground out sends Harris home. The Sox take the lead in the 4th on a solo shot by Trot Nixon. Meanwhile, Wake is not allowing any hits but walking 6 Yankees total through 6. Jorge Posada starts out the 7th with a fly out, but then Robinson Cano breaks up the no-no with a single. Pinch hitter Kevin Reese walks and I pull Wakefield, as he is over 100 pitches and has now issued 7 walks. Keith Foulke enters in relief, and the Yankees counter with pinch hitter Jason Giambi. Giambi hits the ball to third, but Mike Lowell misplays it and now the bases are loaded. Andy Phillips is up next and he clears the bases with a triple, and now the Yankees have just 2 hits but 4 runs for the game. That is followed by a Damon walk, a Jeter single, and a Sheffield single to score 2 more runs and chase Foulke from the game. Julian Tavarez enters and gets the last 2 outs, but the Sox are now down 6-2.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Red Sox get a leadoff double from Doug Mirabelli, followed by a passed ball and a Willie Harris walk. Youkilis fouls out but Loretta hits a sac fly to score Mirabelli. Ortiz doubles to score Harris, Manny walks, but pinch hitter Wily Mo Pena strikes out to end the inning. Sox are now down 6-4.

Tavarez allows a leadoff double to Cano in the 8th, but then sets the Yankees down. Mike Lowell leads off the Sox 8th with a single, and the Yanks go to Rivera from the pen. Alex Cora is up next and gets a single on a hit-and-run attempt, which means Lowell goes to 3rd. JT Snow pinch hits for Mirabelli and singles to score a run and send Cora to 2nd. Willie Harris sacrifices to move the runners over, and Youkilis follows with a single to score the tying and go-ahead run! Mark Loretta flies out for the 2nd out of the inning, but Ortiz singles to make it 8-6 and Manny puts the exclamation point on it with a 2-run homer to make it 10-6. Papelbon enters, and a one-out Jeter single is all the Yanks can come up with, Sox win!
