April 14, 2006: Red Sox 14 Mariners 2

This game looks like a blowout, but it was a 2-2 tie going into the bottom of the 7th when Jason Varitek hit a 3 run homer. Varitek had also knocked in the first 2 runs of the game on a single in the 4th. Then the Red Sox made it a laugher in the 8th with 9 more runs, including another Varitek 3 run shot to give him 8 RBIs on the day.

Here's how the Sox put it away in the 8th:
David Murphy led off against Rafael Soriano, who had been in the game since the 6th. Murphy doubled and the Mariners immediately went to the bullpen and George Sherill. Wily Mo Pena was up next and he walked. Alex Gonzalez was next and he singled, loading the bases. The Mariners again go to the bullpen for Jake Woods. Kevin Youkilis cleared the bases with a double, making it 8-2 Sox. Youkilis advanced to 3rd on the throw to the plate. Mark Loretta singled to score Youk, 9-2 Sox. Big Papi was next and he singled, sending Loretta to 2nd. Manny then doubled to score Loretta and send Papi to 3rd, 10-2 Sox. Next was the Varitek homer to make it 13-2. Mike Lowell is the 9th batter of the inning and we still don't have any outs - and he singles. David Murphy comes up for the 2nd time in the inning and hits his 2nd double of the inning, sending Lowell to 3rd. Pena comes up again and he makes the first out of the inning by flying out. Gonzalez then pops out to the shortstop to make it 2 outs. Woods commits a wild pitch to score Lowell from 3rd, 14-2 Sox, but then gets Youks to line out to the third baseman to finally end the inning.

Jason Varitek launched 2 homeruns and had 8 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston
Red Sox, running on all cylinders, ripped the Seattle Mariners by a large 14
to 2 margin.

Varitek was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed their
appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He lashed a
single bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning, belted a three-run
homer in the 7th inning and lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the
season) in the 8th inning. Overall Boston out-hit Seattle 16 to 8.

The winning pitcher was Curt Schilling(2-1) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings.
Rafael Soriano(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.

'I was really seeing the ball tonight,' Varitek said 'I wish it was always
this easy.'
